(More customer reviews)At this point in time (2010), LED light bulbs are getting brighter and can be used as a low energy light source instead of CFLs in many situations; but they are not cost effective. The 15 watt BR40 was my first 100w equivalent LED bulb. I have several 5-7 watt LED light bulbs and the new Evolux 13 watt (100 watt equivalent) light bulb.
The BR40 has a rather large diameter, so installing it into a floor lamp involved reshaping the lamp shade harp. I am very satisfied with the brightness of the BR40 bulb; but unlike the other LED bulbs I have purchased, the BR40 has a lag between turning it on and seeing it light up. It's as though it is charging up a ballast, then sending power to the LEDs.
The BR40 seems to be a great low energy replacement 23 watt CFL that I formerly had in the floor lamp. The energy savings is not cost effective (10 watts per hour), but LEDs do not have any mercury in them and they presumably last for 50 years of normal use. The other advantage over CFLs is their low heat generation.
Basically, there is no cost advantage to using 120 volt LED light bulbs. It's just green. However, I do have an LED desk lamp that is powered by an 9 volt adapter; during a power outage, this lamp has provided light for 8 hours using a (3) 9 volt battery harness I made.
I think future homes will have additional 9 to 12 volt circuits for LED lighting. Currently, the bulbs must use 120 volts and converted it to low voltage DC.
