About a year and a half of ownership the "10,000 hour life" lamp became black near the ends of the tubes and the light output was greatly diminished. I estimated the lamp had about 2000 to 2500 hours on it. I ordered another lamp ($21.00).
While waiting for the new lamp to arrive the desk lamp began to emit a crackling noise and, within a minute, went dead. I unplugged the desk lamp and took it apart. The electronic ballast was "cooked"! I was fortunate it did not catch fire.
Verilux does not sell a replacement ballast. Furthermore, the desk lamp was beyond the one year warranty. I managed to find a replacement ballast on the Internet and ordered it ($25.00). When it arrived I replaced the original ballast with the new ballast, remounted the parts and inserted the new lamp. It is now working properly.
I would not recommend this table lamp to anyone. It not only does not meet the lamp specification but failed to operate after a 18 month period, cost $45.00 to repair and is, in my opinion, a fire hazard.
