(More customer reviews)This product is a real find. The dimmer switch on an old touchiere lamp went -- and they literally don't make touchieres the way they used to. This switch is rated for 500 W bulbs (which is excellent and means you can easily use 300 W bulbs with it) and does fit (with a little too much effort than should be required) inside the post of a 1.5 OD tourchiere tube.
All you need are wire cutters and a wire stripper, all necessary parts are included in this package. Instructions are clear. Only reason for a 4 star rating is that it was a bit tough to squeeze the unit down the tube.
I bought a spare -- who knows how long this bargain part will be available?
UPDATE: There is another dimmer switch on Amazon (Angelo Brothers 70801 Halogen Dimmer for Torchiere Lamps) that is much easier to install without squeezing into the 1.5 OD tube. It's made by Westinghouse and I reviewed it as well. I've used both in the past few months. Either switch will work fine, the other switch just installed easier.
